I recently went hiking with a friend. Our plan: hike to Eltz Castle. So we set off from Frankfurt by car in the morning. After about 1 1/2 hours we arrived in Wierschem. We first found out about the best places to park online. We chose the parking lot at the Wierschen village community center, it is very cheap and an ideal starting point for the hike. After about 1 1/2 hours of hiking through the really beautiful landscape, we arrived at the castle. It is not open to the public at the moment, but it was still very impressive to look at the so-called hilltop castle from the 12th century from the outside. We hiked a little higher to enjoy the full view of the castle and the valley in which it lies. On the way back from the castle to the parking lot, the spontaneous idea came up (since we were not far from the Moselle) to buy local wine. By the time we got back to the parking lot, it was already afternoon and also the weekend. It was clear to us that no winery would open its doors to us so spontaneously, without prior notice. We came across the Walter J. Oster wine shop in Cochem via Google. The wine shop is very central so we took a short walk through the very beautiful place. When we arrived at the wine shop, we were greeted in a very friendly manner by two employees and immediately offered help. I didn't know the winery before and was therefore simply curious about the range and the story behind it. After we had tried two wines, the employee brought out the “Silent Heroes” wine. We were also able to try this one: a cuvée made from Gewürztraminer, Riesling and Rivaner. The story behind the wine really impressed me. This wine was specially bottled by the Walter J. Oster winery and the wine manufacturer Walter J. Oster to say "THANK YOU" and to give small moments of happiness to everyone who has achieved great things in the last few months. 1,000 bottles of it were distributed to hospitals, doctor's offices and grocery stores as a token of appreciation. For every bottle of “Silent Heroes” wine sold, €1.50 is donated to regional aid organizations. This wine is not only a great product but there is also a special project behind it that impressed me.
For me it is important to buy locally because it is simply nice to exchange ideas, learn new things and get a completely different connection to the producer and his product.
